David Altmejd

MUDAM, David ALTMEJD, Flux, 07/03/2015 - 31/05/2015

David Altmejd produces creatures combining the anthropomorphic and the animal, vegetal and mineral hybrids. His approach to sculpture is characterized by the use of a wide variety of materials (including steel, epoxy clay, crystals, plexiglass and mirrors), emphasis on the details, complex and surrealistic forms, and a genuine interest in the natural sciences (biology in particular), cinema of the fantastic and architecture.

Born in Montreal in 1974, David Altmejd lives and works in New York. After studying visual arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where he majored in drawing and painting, he graduated as a sculptor in 1998. In 2001, he moved to New York and studied fine arts at the Columbia University. In 2007 he represented Canada at the 52nd Venice Biennale with his installation The Index.

The current exhibition was presented at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris (closing February 1st 2015) and following Luxembourg, it is planned to be presented to the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal.
