Schumann’s first major choral work, Das Paradies und die Peri was a big success at its 1843 premiere in Leipzig and was based on an episode from Thomas Moore’s epic poem Lalla Rookh (Thomas Moore was close friend of Byron). I adore this piece.
Sir Simon Rattle was fantastic and ‘the LSO seemed to be on its best behaviour, keen to impress its potential new music director’. (The guardian, 12 Jan 2015) It worked! In March 2015, it was announced that Rattle opted to move to London in 2017 - rather than to New York Philharmonic Orchestra replacing Alain Gilbert.
